History of Sambhar Lake, in this the story of the formation of the famous Sambhar Lake is told through ancient legends.
The history of Shakambhari Mata situated in Sambhar is thousands of years old, which has been mentioned in many Puranas along with Mahabharata. The history of this place in the form of legends is from Ramayana period to Mughal period.
According to a legend, there used to be a sea at this place during Ramayana period. The arrow that Lord Rama had shot at the sea while going to Lanka for Sita Mata had fallen at this place.
Due to the arrow, most of the water of the sea here dried up and only this lake remained as its remains. Due to the effect of that arrow, the surrounding land also turned into a desert.
According to another legend, during the Mahabharata period, this region was ruled by the demon king Vrishparva and the Kulguru of the demons, Shukracharya, used to live here.
It was at this place that Shukracharya's daughter Devyani was married to King Yayati. Later, Yayati also married Sharmishtha, daughter of demon king Vrishparva.
Even today, two ponds are built on one side of Sambhar Lake in the name of King Yayati's two wives Devyani and Sharmishtha.
According to a mythological legend, due to a demon named Durgam, there was a terrible famine in this place and animals started dying due to lack of food and water. Then Durga Mata took a new form and performed penance here.
It is said that the stream of mother's tears made the land green, due to which vegetables and fruits and flowers grew. Due to growing vegetables, the mother was named Shakambhari.
