Was Sambhar Lake really formed like this? It is about the creation of the world-famous Sambhar Lake near Jaipur according to historical legend.
The history of Shakambhari Mata situated in Sambhar is thousands of years old, which has been mentioned in many Puranas along with Mahabharata. In the form of legends, the history of this place is from the Ramayana period to the Mughal period.
According to a legend, the history of this place is linked to the seventh century when King Vasudev, the founder of the Chauhan dynasty, settled a town called Shakambhar Sapadalaksha in the name of his Kuldevi Shakambhari Mata.
Later with time, the name of this town was changed to Sambhar. The Chauhan king liked to call himself Sambharishav i.e. Shakambhariraj.
Another legend is popular behind the formation of Salt Lake in Sambhar. According to this legend, pleased with the devotion of King Vasudev Chauhan of the Chauhan dynasty, the mother gave him a boon.
When the king asked for a treasure of wealth, the goddess said that the land up to the distance he would run his horse without looking back would be filled with wealth.
It is said that after running his horse for 12 Kos, the king looked back and the entire land turned into silver. Later, when the king realized the fights and quarrels that were happening due to the greed for silver, he asked the goddess to take back this boon.
The goddess refused to take back the boon and said that she will turn it into raw silver instead of pure silver. After this, the goddess turned this land of silver into raw silver i.e. salt.
It is said that due to the blessings of the goddess, salt is deposited naturally only in Sambhar in the whole of India. Even today, this lake produces the most salt in the country.
