The importance of rats in the temple is known from the fact that these rats keep eating the Prasad offered to Mata and this Prasad is distributed among the devotees.
There are so many rats in the temple in thousands that it has been named as Rat Temple. All these rats are considered to be the descendants of Mata and some of these rats are white in color.
It is believed that whoever sees a white rat in this temple, it means that he has seen Mataji.
The mother, who is worshipped as a folk goddess, is called Daadhi Wali Dokri in the local language because she lived a long life of 151 years and grew a beard in old age.
Due to her miraculous powers, she is known as Karni Mata all over the world. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple of Mata built in Deshnok town of Bikaner is the place where Karni Mata used to live about 550 years ago.
This cave-like place was built by Karni Mata with her own hands in the form of a dome for living. In this dome, the idol of Mata made of Jaisalmer stone made by Banna Khati of Jaisalmer is enshrined. Banna Khati was blind to whom Mata gave darshan by giving special vision.
