Why Jahangir built a cenotaph near Shakambhari Mata temple? It is about the history that how Mughal Emperor Jahangir came to destroy Shakambhari Mata temple.
Shakambhari Mata temple's history is also related to Mughal Emperor Jahangir. It is said that when the Mughal army came to destroy the temple, a flock of bees came out of Mata's eyes which attacked the Mughal army and drove them away.
When the Emperor came to know about this, he could not believe it and he himself came here. On coming here, he came to know that at this place the whole mountain is being worshipped in the form of an idol, so the idol cannot be broken because if the idol has to be broken, then the whole mountain will have to be broken.
When the Emperor asked for a solution to this, he was told that if the eternal flame burning here in place of the idol is turned off, then the sanctity of the temple will be destroyed.
The emperor placed seven thick iron plates on the fire to put off the eternal flame burning in the temple, but the flame did not stop, rather it started burning even after passing through these plates.
Seeing all this, the emperor bowed his head in front of the miracle of the goddess. After this, the emperor got a cenotaph built on the hill behind the temple, which is still called Jahangir's cenotaph.
This cenotaph is built on the hill behind the temple, where there are concrete stairs to go there. An inscription of that time is also placed inside the cenotaph.
You can see a beautiful view of the Sambhar Lake from this cenotaph. When the water level in the lake is low, white land mixed with salt is visible all around.
