Why is Devyani and Sharmishtha Kund famous? It is about holy Devyani and Sharmishtha Kund present in Sambhar on the name of two wives of King Yayati.
During the Mahabharata period, the Sambhar region was ruled by the demon king Vrishparva and the Kulguru of the demons, Shukracharya, lived here. It was at this place that Shukracharya's daughter Devyani was married to King Yayati. Later, he also married Sharmishtha, the daughter of the demon king Vrishparva.
Even today, two ponds have been built on one side of the Sambhar Lake in the name of these two wives of King Yayati, Devyani and Sharmishtha. Devyani Kund is considered a holy pilgrimage site. There are more than a dozen ghats built around the pond and many temples, one of which is Devyani's own temple.
9 Brahmin families worship in these temples. Many animals live in the lake, which include fishes, snakes etc. Devyani was the daughter of demon Guru Shukracharya, due to which this pond has been given the status of grandmother of all the pilgrimages.
Women who observe fast in the month of Kartik especially come to take bath in Devyani Sarovar. This holy bath starts from Devuthani Ekadashi of Kartik and continues till Kartik Purnima.
It is said that after the war of Mahabharata, Ashwatthama did penance and took bath at this place. Even today, Ashwatthama's platform is built on the pond, and it is said that he did penance sitting on this platform.
Sheeshmahal built by the kings of Amer is also built on the banks of the lake. The carvings and pillars of the Sheeshmahal still reflect their ancient beauty.
Sharmishtha Sarovar is built a little ahead of Devyani Sarovar. As we told you that Sharmishtha was the daughter of Daityaraja Vrishparva, who was also married to King Yayati. Sharmishtha Sarovar is also considered very sacred, but its importance is much less in front of Devyani Sarovar.
