Why is Khatu Shyam Mandir Mundru famous? It provides information about the ancient Khatu Shyam Temple above and below the earth located in Mundru.
In the middle of Mundru town located in Shrimadhopur tehsil of Sikar district, there is a temple of Shyam Baba which is known as the ancient Shyam Temple.
The special thing about this Shyam temple is that there are two separate temples above and below the ground in which two different Idols of Baba Shyam are worshipped.
In both these temples, the original temple is located below the ground, to which stairs have been built to go. While renovating the temple, the original temple was kept intact in its original form.
After the renovation, the new temple built above the original temple is quite grand. The construction of the temple's peak and the grand work of mirror inlay were completed with public cooperation.
It is said that due to geographical changes, the original temple of Baba Shyam had disappeared into the womb of the earth. In the 1960s, due to heavy rainfall, the ground in the village sank and a deep pit was formed in which a temple-like structure was visible.
Later, on digging, the ancient temple of Baba Shyam was found in its original form. The thickness of the lime and stone walls of the temple and its sanctum sanctorum and the smell of dampness still prove the antiquity of this temple.
It is said that one night, Thakur Harderam of Mundru had a dream that Barbarik's head was buried somewhere. Later, on digging at that place, a stone in the form of Barbarik's head was found there.
Thakur Sahib got the head installed at the excavated place in 1599 AD (Vikram Samvat 1656) and got the Shyam temple constructed.
