Why is Ballu Ji Champawat famous? It gives information about Ballu Ji Champawat and his cenotaph located in Debari near Udaipur where he died in war.
There are three historical cenotaphs built in front of the Debari gate. These cenotaphs belong to the martyred warriors in the war near this gate.
According to an article present here, the middle chhatri among these chhatris belongs to Gaura Singh Rathore i.e. Ballu Dasot who was martyred while fighting in the Debari war with Aurangzeb's army in 1679-80 AD.
Gora Singh Rathore was the son of Ballu Champawat about whom it is said that he was born once, died twice and was cremated thrice.
But according to a legend, this chhatri of Debari belongs to Ballu Champawat himself. When Ballu Ji was in the service of Maharana of Mewar, he had promised the Maharana to come whenever needed.
When Aurangzeb attacked Mewar, Maharana Raj Singh remembered him. It is said that to keep his promise, Balluji came back to fight even after dying and was martyred again while fighting.
Balluji was cremated in front of the Debari gate and this chhatri was built in his memory. In this way, Balluji's second cremation took place inside Debari.
Let us tell you that Balluji's first cremation took place 35 years before the Battle of Debari i.e. in 1644 AD on the banks of the Yamuna River in Agra.
When the king of Nagaur, Amar Singh Rathore, was treacherously murdered in the Agra fort and his body was kept on the turret of the fort, then Amar Singh's queens gave the responsibility of bringing his body to Balluji.
Baluji went to the fort on the pretext of having the last darshan of his king Amar Singh and placing Amar Singh's body on a horse, jumped from the turret. After sending Amar Singh's dead body to the queens, Balluji was martyred while fighting.
