Why is Debari Gate famous? It contains information about the historical gate built by Maharana Udai Singh in the Debari valley near Udaipur city.
There is a door built to enter Udaipur from the eastern side of Udaipur i.e. from Chittor side, which is called Debari Gate.
This door is the only way to enter Udaipur city from Chittorgarh via Nahra Magra. The main reason for building a door at this place is that in old times, most of the attacks on Udaipur used to happen from Chittor.
When Maharana Udai Singh left Chittor and established Udaipur, then he also built a strong rampart along with this door in the Debari valley to keep it safe.
At that time, the responsibility of protecting this eastern door used to be in the hands of Devda chieftains. This door was broken twice in the war with Akbar, Jahangir and Aurangzeb, which was rebuilt by Maharana Raj Singh.
It is said that during the princely era, this door used to have a small window, due to which it was called Devbari. As time passed, this door changed from Devbari to Debari.
According to a legend, when the Mughals tried to surround Maharana Pratap in Ubeshwar, the Shivling of Ubeshwar Mahadev split in the middle and the bees came out of it and attacked the Mughals and chased them out of the Debari door.
After that, these bees started living on this door of Debari by making a hive. Even today you will see many beehives around this door.
