Why is Ajan Bai Palace famous? It contains information about Ajan Bai Mahal in Govardhan Vilas area of Udaipur near Goverdhan Sagar Lake.
Govardhan Vilas Mahal is present in a lane on the left side, just before Govardhan Vilas Lake on the Udaipur to Ahmedabad Highway. These palaces were built by Maharana Swaroop Singh.
This is the same Maharana Swaroop Singh who built Govardhan Vilas Lake. It is said that he spent some time of his life in these palaces.
Maharana Swaroop Singh banned Kanya Vadh in 1844 AD, Dakun Pratha in 1853 AD and Sati Pratha in 1861 AD along with Samadhi Pratha.
It is said that in this palace, his Khawas Ajan Bai or Anjabai used to live with the Maharana to serve him. Ajan Bai became Sati with the Maharana after his death in 1861 AD.
Maharana Swaroop Singh had banned the practice of Sati in this year, so Ajan Bai was the last Sati in the history of Mewar. Because of Ajan Bai, over time, these palaces of Govardhan Vilas came to be known as Ajan Bai Mahal.
A beautiful pond has been built in the palace square and there are murals on the walls of the rooms in front. The old paintings, gokhdas, Sheesh Mahal and old wooden doors present in the palace have either been destroyed or are on the verge of destruction.
